Central Science Fair 2025

Thursday, December 11th

Curious minds, get ready to explore! Central’s non-competitive Science Fair is a fun opportunity for all K–5 students to dive into hands-on discovery.

What is Science Fair?

  • Students K – 5th can work solo or team up with a Central sibling or friend to investigate a question that sparks their curiosity.
  • With a parent or guardian’s support, each young scientist will design and carry out their own experiment at home, following the five steps of the Scientific Method – you’ll find more about that below!
  • Display boards will be provided to all students who register by November 10th.

Project Ideas

We encourage you to have your child use their own curiosity or interests as the motivation for the question.  Don’t worry if the question or resulting experiment does not seem sophisticated enough. The best type of question for an elementary school Science Fair, even if it seems simple, is one for which your child is yearning to have the answer!

Scientific Method

Get ready to have some fun young scientists! Follow the 5 simple steps below and you will have completed an experiment using the Scientific Method.

Use this Scientific Method Worksheet to record your progress through each step OR use your own paper that can be pasted to the board for your display. Your final display should have at least 5 sections corresponding to the 5 steps of the Scientific Method:

  1. Question
  2. Hypothesis
  3. Experiment
  4. Results
  5. Conclusion

Here’s how to help your child get started with their Science Fair project!

Step 1: Learn the Types of Science Projects

Before you grab your goggles, think about what kind of science project you want to do! Science projects usually fall into two categories:

1. Models (or Displays):
This kind of project shows how something works. You might build a volcano, make a solar system, or explain the water cycle. These projects are cool to look at, but they don’t test or measure anything. Examples:

  • Types of Dinosaurs

  • How a Volcano Erupts

2. Experiments:

This kind of project uses the Scientific Method to test an idea to find out what happens. You change one thing (a variable) and see the results. That’s how real scientists work—and it’s extra fun because you get to discover something new!
Examples:

  • Do taller ramps make cars go faster?

  • What type of soil helps plants grow best?

  • Does music help plants grow faster?

  • Which material keeps ice from melting the longest?

For this year’s Science Fair, we encourage you to do an experiment – it lets you ask a question, make predictions, and find out the answer yourself!

Step 2: Use the Planning Guide

Your Science Fair Planning Guide will help you:

  • Learn each step of the Scientific Method

  • Choose your project topic

  • Prepare your display board for the fair

Step 3: Create Your Science Fair Question

Use one of these starter formats to get ideas flowing:

  • “The Effect of ___ on ___”

  • “How Does ___ Affect ___?”

  • “Which/What ___ Is Best for ___?”

Need help choosing a topic?

  • Ask a parent or guardian to explore the online resources below
  • Visit your local library and ask the librarian for science books or magazines.

Once you have your question, write it down and start thinking of a title for your project.

Step 4: Follow the 5 Steps of the Scientific Method

Get ready to have some fun, young scientists! Follow these five steps and you’ll complete your experiment just like a pro:

  1. Question – What do you want to find out?

  2. Hypothesis – What do you think will happen?

  3. Experiment – Test your idea and record your results.

  4. Results – What did you observe?

  5. Conclusion – What did you learn from your experiment?

Use the Scientific Method Worksheet (or your own paper) to record your progress.

Step 5: Prepare Your Display Board

Once your experiment is complete, it’s time to show off your work!

  • Display boards will be provided to all teams registered by November 10th.

  • Your board should clearly show the five steps of the Scientific Method along with your results, photos, and any creative touches.
